Alright here goes.....I am getting a peruvian boar under 1 year old that I was told is allergic to apples. I was told that he gets this brown crustiness around his mouth. Has anyone had experience with a allergy like this before and if so what was the outcome?

Two things immediately come to mind: either some sort of sensitivity to acidy foods like apples, oranges, etc., or the mouth condition called Cheilitis. Do you know how much apple this pig was given on a regular basis? You might read this and print off the photos to see if it looks familiar to the current owner: www.guinealynx.info/cheilitis.html

Sef, I printed the picture and I will be meeting the guy with the piggies in 30 minutes so I will have a better idea of what's going on.

I'm with Sef on this one. I don't think it's an "allergy" either. It's more than likely one of the two reasons she posted here.

Well I got the piggies and the boar that had the problem is not showing any signs of anything wrong. His nose and mouth and even teeth look great. I am not going to chance it. I am putting a label with him "No apples" Thanks everyone. pics soon.

It sounds like he's sensitive to the acid in the apples. Mouth sores like this tend to occur when the lips have been in contact with such foods. I wonder if the same crustiness would occur if he was fed other acidic foods, like tomato, orange etc.?

I thought I remember reading somewhere to only feed acidic foods occasionally so something like this doesn't happen, no?

Yes, exactly. I agree he'll most likely have the same reaction with other acidy foods, assuming this isn't something bacterial or viral that crops up occasionally.

So far so good. He has had romaine lettuce, parsley, hay, pellet food, green pepper, and no reaction to any of it.

For future reference, please do not mention a Peruvian pig and not post pictures! Peruvians are my weakness (wheekness) and I can not bear to not see a photo of said piggy. But am happy he is doing well!
