I'm planning to go ahead and put baby Barnaby with Aaron this week. Barnaby is quite small, and I'm a little worried about the safety of a hay rack in the cage---which I currently use in all of the other cages to help keep the fleece bedding less messy (in theory, anyway; somehow the hay still gets scattered all over the place). Any ideas?

I scatter hay on floor but put Timothy hay in a bowl/plate. Could he get into a litter tray? You could try that. As long as they don't use it as a toilet.

What sort of hay rack do you use currently?
Are you worried about him getting stuck?

I have the metal kind that hangs on the side of the cage and don't want to risk Barnaby running and jumping into one. He's kind of a wild man.

My favorite, and what I've been using for a while now,is a fabric hay bag with either one or 2 openings for the hay. Note: A baby or smaller pig can climb inside them but they can just as easily climb back out. One youngster found it to be the perfect hang out place, she would sit inside and happily munch away. The first time she did it, gave me a huge scare as the hay hid her from view. Imagine walking by and seeing only one pig where just a little while ago, there were two! I thought she had somehow jumped out of the cage until I saw the hay bag move. I've only seen a couple of pigs do that and they quickly grew out of it.

Ha! I can imagine the momentary feeling of panic! I have seen those fabric hay feeders and might give it a shot. Thanks for the suggestion!

I just put the hay right on the bedding. My boys don't really care for racks and dispensers. Since I change the fleece at least every other day, it doesn't get too dirty. The guinea pigs use it for more than just eating. It's also very comfortable to lay in. Mr bubbles even carries some of it into his house to lay on. Since I give them unlimited hay, there's always plenty of it laying around for them to forage through (which is very good for them to do). I've noticed when I change their bedding that they do most of their peeing and pooping in one or two spots. The hay ends up spread from one end to the other, but there's not much of their waste in the hay.
