I have seen "chirping" mentioned over the years, as a sound that guinea pigs sometimes make. Not all that common, apparently, and none of ours has ever been heard doing that. Our newly adopted Barnaby was making this sound last night, though, and I was curious to know if anyone else here has ever encountered it and, if so, what you attribute it to. There has been a lot of debate as to the meaning.
It was interesting!

Oh my the chirpers I have had here. The first time I heard it I spent an hour looking for a bird in the house. That is what it sounds like. They say they make that noise when they are very scared. I usually only hear it at night and once I turn the light on in the room they get quiet.

We have had 2 chirpers. I recorded the second one and use it on my mobile when it rings. Like GPL I spent sometime looking for a cricket or a bird. Sadly the 2 pigs who did chirp passed away 6-12 months later. Both only ever did it once unless they did it when I was asleep.
Feel very privileged to have heard it. On GL they said it was the pig calling the mother ship. What ever that means.

I am wondering if maybe it was because Barnaby was upset over the teeth chattering that Jeremy and Jethro were engaging in when I had the bright idea to try to put them back together that evening. The reunion lasted all of an hour before I finally gave up and put them back in their respective cages.
